While I was at work on Friday, I came to the realization that we are,in many ways, going back to the 1990s. It’s kinda weird that some things from those days are returning, but for me,I’m kinda okay with it!
In a day and age where we have a lot of civil unrest, an uncertain future, and several celebrities who’ve died,it’s nice to see something come back from a time long gone.
What’s come back, for instance? Well, how about Crystal Pepsi for starters? I reviewed the 90s beverage last week for its limited run. It’s pretty good, but damnit,it’s hard to find. I’ve only been able to find it at one store so far as of press time and tried to get a couple bottles before work on Friday and they were all out. I guess it’s become that big of a craze.
Still don’t believe me that the 90s are back? Birkenstocks have become popular again. When I was in middle school and high school during the mid-90s a lot of the most popular and pretty girls were wearing Birkenstocks on their feet. I thought they were kinda cool until I heard that they were a stereotypical footwear for lesbians. Twenty years later, they’re back. I’m almost amazed and impressed. Just as long as they’re not wearing those things to prom, that’s just plain stupid and not fashion forward.
So are two examples not good enough for you? How about this year’s unusual obsession with the O.J. Simpson case? First we had the miniseries on FX with David Schwimmer,John Travolta, and Cuba Gooding Jr. among others, then we had the ESPN 30 for 30 about O.J. earlier this summer.
Or how about the Full House reboot of Fuller House? And if that’s not enough for you,we have reboots of Gilmore Girls,The First Wives Club, and a possible sequel to the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. Also rumoured are reboots of Baywatch the Power Rangers in cinema form.
How about the musical reunions we’re seeing with Guns N Roses currently on tour and did an amazing show at AT&T Park on Tuesday night? Blink-182 is also touring as are Korn and Rob Zombie. It’s also been hinted that the Spice Girls may get back together.
What about in the sports world? Well,we’ve got the Rams back in Los Angeles and professional football back in that city for the first time since 1994. Pretty throwback if you ask me!
Is that still not enough to convince you the 90s are back? How about the announcement that Disneyland is bringing back The Main Street Electrical Parade for the first time since 1996?
It seems like all we’re missing to make the 90s even more prevalent in our lives is the reintroduction of POGs (which I would welcome in a heartbeat) and an Ace of Base reunion tour. Why not stop there? Let’s bring back the Arch Deluxe to McDonald’s and picture-in-picture televisions while we’re at it.
As I said at the top it’s kinda neat to see so many things come back that were popular back then, but as Robin Williams asked in the 1995 movie Jumanji, “What year is it?”
