Recently outside a meeting I was at, I was mentioning Taco Bell and how much I loved one of their items they have added recently and I got to thinking that this list needed to be made. Why? Because there is nothing more American than Taco Bell with the way they have Americanized Mexican food. Not to mention that they, more than anyone else, make their food in a way no other place can. That is what is great (and American) about it. Here is our list of The Greatest Items Ever Served at Taco Bell!
10. Seven Layer Burrito
Whoever thought to essentially put seven layer bean dip in a burrito is a genius! Hell, the band Primus mentioned it in their song “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” in 1995. Debuting in the mid-1990s (1994,I believe), the Seven Layer Burrito is a meatless burrito with rice, beans, three cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole all in one burrito. One of the most underrated items at Taco Bell, but it’s very good and in my mind worthy enough to put on this list.
9. Cheesy Gordita Crunch
A great combination of soft and crunchy, the Cheesy Gordita Crunch is described by Urban Dictionary as a tasty snack available at Taco Bell consisting of a soft, warm gordita shell, connected via cheese to a crunchy corn tortilla shell, filled with beef, lettuce, cheese, and a special sauce. That special sauce, whatever that is,is what makes the Cheesy Gordita Crunch the great item that it is and what ties it all together. Oh yeah, the soft and crunchy shell is pretty good, too. The only knock I have is that it could be a little cheaper. Spending nearly $3 on one could be why it is only ninth on our list.
8. Mountain Dew Baja Blast
I will bet some of you are thinking “T.J., this is a soft drink, why is this here?”, but let’s get tropical here,Greatest Items Ever Served at Taco Bell list, and Mountain Dew Baja Blast is ONLY served at Taco Bell. I love everything about this drink, the taste, the unique teal-green color, and of course the tropical taste. You can’t not get it when you go to Taco Bell, it’s right there in front of you at the soda fountain daring you to not have any. This item is so good that once it first came out in 2004, I wanted to get some of this at the grocery store so I could have some at home and was disappointed to know that it cannot be sold in stores.
In retrospect, that’s actually a good thing because it is one of those items that do keep me going back to Taco Bell. Clever marketing move if you ask me.
7. Enchirito
This was a great item on the Taco Bell menu for nearly 30 years until the Smothered Burrito replaced it in 2013, but for what it’s worth, the Enchirito was also very delicious. Consisting of a tortilla filled with taco meat (but you could substitute for steak and chicken) beans, onions, cheese, and enchilada sauce. A very underrated item (and an inexpensive one at that), the Enchirito was a meal in itself. Any burrito you can eat with a fork is a good one. Who says you need you hands to eat one? It’s spirit lives on in the Smothered Burrito which is much bigger and has sour cream and rice and is eaten in the same manner as the Enchirito. But it’s the original that makes the list because nothing beats a true original.
6. MexiMelt
By far the most underrated item Taco Bell still serves, the MexiMelt is one of those items that although you’re unsure of what it is, it tastes pretty good. Inside a soft tortilla is taco meat (which can be substituted),pico de gallo and three cheeses. I definitely like getting these at Taco Bell, I wish they cost less than $1.79 because of how small they are, but they are pretty delicious and they always seem to hit the spot. Any food item that hits the spot for me has to be on this list,so MexiMelt, take your seat at the six spot on our list.
5. TIE: Cinnamon Twists/Caramel Apple Empanada
Our fifth spot is a tie between two very good dessert treats.
The Cinnamon Twists are very delicious. I can’t picture Taco Bell without this item. Soft puffy corn twists (basically a fried churro) sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and warmed up (most of the time) are very irresistable. I also love them because they are inexpensive and a great way to end a meal at Taco Bell.
The Caramel Apple Empanada is a great favorite as well,me and my dad love getting these. This crispy golden pastry filled with caramel apples is definitely one to not miss out on. What I love most about it is how gooey it tastes, and they stay warm for a while, too!
These two items are definitely a great dessert treat.
4. Crunchwrap Supreme
Debuting in 2005, the Crunchwrap Supreme looks like a spaceship full of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream, but it is delicious. I don’t think I could make one for the life of me because the construction looks very complicated, but I will gladly eat one.
When creating this list,I asked a lot of folks what their favorite items were and this item came up so many times and I understand why, it’s because it’s got so much to it and when it’s all together,it’s all good.
3. Crunchy Taco
You can’t do this list and not include the item that started it all. The crunchy taco is very good with your beef, lettuce, and cheese. Sometimes, that’s all you need.
Add some Taco Bell Border Sauce to it if you must, but a Taco Bell Crunchy Taco is still pretty damn good after all these years and we wouldn’t have Taco Bell without it, it’s the original.
2. Mexican Pizza
You gotta love the Mexican Pizza! Two crispy shells with beef and beans and topped with sauce, cheese, and tomatoes and you have four pieces of heaven.
It’s one of those items where if you want a pizza with a taco twist, there you have the Mexican Pizza. It’s definitely a favorite of mine and would be the first overall selection if not for our number one item.
1. Doritos Locos Tacos
The taco was forever changed when this item came on the scene in 2012. Whoever thought to make Doritos taco shells is awesome. Now in three varieties (Nacho Cheese,Cool Ranch, and now Fiery), the Doritos Locos Taco is your favorite taco with some flavor to it. I personally go for the Nacho Cheese one because they taste good and you have to lick the nacho cheese residue off your fingers. This definitely changed the game for Taco Bell and made them even better in my opinion. We might not have done this list if this item didn’t come out. It’s that good!
