I should clarify something, it’s not that I don’t like camping, it’s that I’m not very good at it. If there’s somewhere I am not meant to be, it’s in the woods with no electricity or no indoor plumbing for an extended period of time.
For those of you that do, more power to you. I’m glad you like it, I just can’t do it. I’ve gone a few times, but it was just not my thing. Even on a family camping trip to the San Joaquin River a few years back, most of my family went, but my mother and I drove back home and went back the next day. Call me a pussy if you want, but I did get to sleep in my own bed that night and that’s something I like to do as often as I can.
The only time I could really tolerate a form of camping was the weeklong summer camp for my youth group in Sonora every July. Sure, we had indoor plumbing and showers, but I watched no TV and didn’t even have a cell phone, so in my world, this was camping. But we had a lot of fun and I wish I could have gone every year, but the three that I did were tremendous. After the week was over,it was nice to get back home and back to life, though. Back in you own bed, your own shower where the water pressure is just right, and back to Men in Black on TNT (That movie was always on when I came home from DLC, I swear to you).
Hell, even going to Pismo Beach for the weekend for a family reunion was camping enough for me, but even that was fun in its own way. Getting away from 100+ degrees in Sacramento to 64 degrees day in and day out there was welcome and seeing a place you hadn’t seen before was nice.
Bottom line, a few days of roughing it out in the wilderness is just not my style. If it is for you, great, but just know that while you’re in a cramped tent with seven other people, I will be in my own bed resting comfortably with plenty of room to spare.
