Sacramento Kings are red-hot and exciting to watch

SacramentoKingsThe Sacramento Kings have become one of the NBA’s early surprises in this young season. Following their season opening loss at home to Golden State, they have yet to lose, beating quality teams like Portland, the L.A. Clippers, and last night,Phoenix.

In a game that they looked out of for most of the night, the Kings found their way back to send the game into two overtimes and eventually win. Fighting the flu, Rudy Gay hit the game-winning shot in the second overtime to edge the Suns,114-112. DeMarcus Cousins led the team with 25 points. The Kings are 5-1 and have their best start since the 2001-02 season, the year in which they were screwed out of playing for an NBA championship (I’m not still bitter, just stating fact).

“It shows you how our team is coming together,” Cousins said. “Even through the tough times and adversity, even when things aren’t going our way, we found a way.”

This team is a fun one to watch and it starts with Cousins. He is averaging 24.2 points and nearly 12 rebounds per game and he’s actually maturing and keeping his cool. He has yet to get a technical foul and even had to calm his coach, Michael Malone, down when he fouled out last night, and he has been a great teammate. I think it’s evident that Cousins and Gay playing for Team USA was nothing but a benefit to not only their game, but to their confidence and their team’s success thus far.

What’s also interesting about this team is who this team is made up of. A lot of guys who were castoffs on other teams like Gay and Derrick Williams to guys who have been nothing but NBA journeymen like Darren Collison, Reggie Evans, and Ramon Sessions. Also,Omri Casspi is back. Toss in young players like Ray McCallum, Ben McLemore, and Nik Stauskas, and you have quite a cast of characters who have blended well and are playing well together.

The Kings have only one way to go,and that’s up. We are only six games in to a very young season and I’d love to see them keep this up. A lot of talking heads said that there was something good brewing with this team, that they could be this year’s Phoenix Suns, and so far, they’re right. Let’s hope they continue to be right because this team is fun to watch and Sacramento deserves to have a team like this in their city.
