Odds & Ends-Volume 62

sharksThe San Jose Sharks have done what they always do,exited early in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and they did it in embarrassing fashion. More embarrassing than their 2009 exit.

Leading their series against the Los Angeles Kings, the Sharks basically shit the bed as they lost four straight games to give the Kings the series and the right to play the Anaheim Ducks in the second round. Captain Joe Thornton gave this team nothing during the series and a round of questionable calls plagued the Sharks from regaining the momentum and finishing off the Kings.

The Sharks need to shake things up if you ask me. This organization is not doing anything new to try and win a Stanley Cup. Sure, they draft well and scout well and have a talented team that should be contending to win a Stanley Cup, but where is the killer instinct to win a championship for this team? I don’t exactly see one. it certainly showed in the Kings, that team has that instinct of not giving up and showing up when it matters. It’s one of the reasons why they won a Stanley Cup in 2012 and one of the reasons why I hoped for them to win that Cup. Championship teams come through when it matters most, the Sharks have just not done that and until they do, that elusive Stanley Cup win will be just that.

I have to give it up to Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban for handling the racist comments directed at him following the Canadiens’ Game 1 win over the Boston Bruins. NHL: APR 07 Maple Leafs at Canadiens

“That stupid n***** doesn’t belong in hockey #whitesonly,” wrote one about Subban.

At one point, the N-word was trending locally in Boston.

“What people may say on Twitter or social media is not a reflection by any means of the league or the Boston Bruins. So whoever that is, they’ll get dealt with, but it’s completely separate from this league or the Boston Bruins organization,” said Subban.

He continued,“I know some of those players personally on that team. Like I said, the fan base has been awesome. They are a great bunch of fans. It’s unfortunate when things take away from the great hockey that was played (on Thursday). It was a fantastic game, great for the league, great for hockey and that’s what we are going to talk about. So I’m happy now that we can just move on.”

I personally like this guy. Not only is he a great hockey player, but he has a great deal of class. I don’t know why anyone would dislike this guy. It bothers me when, in 2014, people have to be hateful of someone of color because he happened to score the game winning goal in a playoff game. Those fans are not real fans to me. The real Bruins fans are the ones who have come out and supported Subban with their remarks and the condemning of the things said by the other Bruins “fans”.

“P.K. Subban is all class!!! Those jerks don’t represent Bruins fans or our city,” tweeted one fan.

Indeed he is!

sfgiants1The Giants have been red hot, winners of nine of their last 10 games, and it’s been done in the weirdest of ways. Over the weekend against the Braves, they swept the series and did so without scoring a runner in scoring position. Up until Brandon Crawford’s two-run homer in eighth on Sunday’s game, the Giants’ chose solo home runs as their poison to beat Atlanta, combined with outstanding pitching (from the starters and the bullpen) and you have the Giants sweeping in Atlanta for the first time since 1988. Atlanta has now lost six straight games.

“That’s incredible,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “What a job our pitching did here. … The long ball, that’s what won it for us because we couldn’t get a hit. They had great pitching as well.”

As I was saying to a friend of mine on Facebook late Saturday night, this team is going places as long as they stay healthy. Sure,it’s only May and it’s easy to say this when there’s a lot of season to go, but I mean it. The guys who have been added like Michael Morse and Tim Hudson have been worth the price of admission. Not to mention that this team has had more offense than they did in the two seasons where they won a World Series. I’m juiced to watch this team again after the disaster of a season they had in 2013. I hope other Giants fans are just as juiced as I am. Happy Flight and on to Pittsburgh!
