Forewarning to people who read me for sports: You can stick around, but you probably won’t like it.
Yesterday morning I was watching Good Day Sacramento, the local morning show here in town and they were doing blonde makeovers. They spotted a girl who they thought needed a makeover, which, that’s fine. She actually looked pretty good, she had dirty blonde hair and she had a really nice pair of brown rectangular glasses on. Here is what bothered me about all of this: the stylist who was doing the makeover was quick to say that they were gonna lose the glasses on her once they were done. The anchor talking with him, Ken Rudulph was quick to ask why because he felt like I did that the glasses were terrific on her. The stylist asked if Rudulph was wearing them and he said that he wasn’t. The stylist pretty much quipped “Well, there you go!” as if to say that glasses make people ugly. That really bothered me. I wanted to shout “Let her wear her god damn glasses!” but people were still sleeping at my house at 7:45 a.m.
Ladies and gentlemen, I have to ask, what’s so bad about wearing glasses?
Folks, this happens time and time again on makeover shows. They’ll take a woman (or man) who has glasses and pretty much take them away from the equation altogether and it baffles me as to why they do it. Are people really still this vain? Isn’t that kind of sad?
Personally, I think these stylists who balk at the idea that a woman can’t be beautiful in glasses should probably open their eyes a little bit. As glasses have become more popular in the last decade, more and more women are donning them and I love it.
If you didn’t know before, you will now; I’m a sucker for a woman in glasses. It’s been that way since I was a kid way before I even needed them. Hell, there was a girl in my third grade class who had them and I thought she was cute, and this was 1990 when glasses didn’t look as cool as they do now. There’s just something about a girl in glasses that I absolutely love that’s very hard to explain. Honestly, I give props to all the ladies who are comfortable enough in their own skin to wear their glasses proudly. It’s also kind of a middle finger to the part of society that thinks that people with glasses are ugly and horrible human beings.
Glasses don’t make people look ugly, in fact, I think many people who do wear them look very enhanced with them on (not that they didn’t look great before, though). Like a watch or any piece of jewelry, they are an accessory. To me, people who don’t wear them or scoff at those who do are just jealous.
As for that girl who got the makeover, I sure hope she put her glasses back on once they made her over. It would have been a shame if she decided not to wear them anymore if you ask me.
