Reviewing “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Mandatory Fun

Mandatory FunIf I’ve never said this before, I will now: “Weird Al” Yankovic is a fucking genius. I love the guy, he’s been tearing it up with his clever parodies for as long as I have been alive, perhaps longer. I even saw him at the California State Fair last year with my friend Mike. He puts on an excellent show.

Tuesday was when Al released his latest parody offerings in his new album, Mandatory Fun.

Parodies include “Foil”, a hilarious song about different uses of aluminum foil, this was a parody of the song “Royals” by Lorde. Then you had “Handy”, a parody of “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea. My favorite lyric for that song is “I’ve got 99 problems, but a switch ain’t one!”. You have “Word Crimes”, a song about grammar nazis (which I am), that song is a parody of “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, the most overplayed song of 2013. There was also a parody of 2014’s most overplayed song, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, that song is called “Tacky”. All of these parodies were very funny and very enjoyable to listen to.

He also had his original stuff like his polka medleys, the best one being “Now That’s What I Call Polka”.

Overall, Al is showing he’s still got it after all these years, that he has no signs of slowing down anytime soon and I hope he doesn’t because he is absolutely fun to listen to. If you ever get a chance to see him live, go do it! If you can’t wait until then, go down to your local music store and purchase this album, you will love it!

Thumbs Up!
